The market is flooded with all manner and types of pocket tools. Some of these are really useful devices. I have fallen prey to their allure myself, and bought more than a few. But, the fact of the matter is, most of these things are big, bulky and heavy. Usually, I would carry mine for a week or so, then it lives in the center console of my truck - Useful still, but, not exactly in my hand when I needed it. Enter our Titanium Key Tool. This little tool tucks neatly among your keys and is there when you need it. We have sold thousands of these and to my recollection we have never had one returned for failure. For years they were manufactured from commercially pure Titanium, a blend of Titanium and very a small fraction of Aluminum (< 2%). Aluminum, in varying quantities, is added to most Titanium alloys because it limits the growth of small fractures, or cracks, which can weaken articles manufactured of it. This time around, we decided to dramatically improve the durability of the tool by switching to ASTM Grade 5 Ultra High Strength Structural Alloy - Ti6Al4V. This material is an exotic alloy blend containing Aluminum and Vanadium. It has a minimum yield strength of 130,000 Lbs/sq. in. - A lot! So, from a technical perspective, though it looks the same as before, it’s a lot better!
Despite its simple design, the Titanium Key Tool is a precision instrument. It was water jet cut, in a process where water, mixed with abrasive powders, is forced into a cutting stream under extremely high pressure to perform machining operations. Water Jet machining offers advantages over laser cutting, as it does not melt the material being cut, thus leaving smooth edges which do not require refinishing. The screwdriver blade of the tool was precision machined. Hand work is involved in the production of this item. So the surface finish may vary slightly, particularly at the beveled end.
Titanium is actually a very reactive metal. The reason it will not rust, or corrode, even in very corrosive atmospheres is because its surface instantly oxidizes when exposed to the air, forming a thin protective layer of Titanium Dioxide. This material is extremely durable, and practically chemically inert. In fact, few strong acids will attack it. As a result, the Key Tool is very durable, and will never rust or corrode during normal use.
Titanium can be blended into many alloys, all of which are very light and corrosion resistant. Despite its light weight, it is extremely strong. Titanium is not particularly hard, and is comparable with a good grade of steel. This means it will work well for what it was intended for, opening bottles, prying open small paint cans, tightening screws to normal hand pressure, etc. However, it is not designed to be comparable in hardness to a tool steel screwdriver. You can damage it if you apply too much pressure. Please use common sense. Other titanium alloys are even stronger and harder, such as beta alloys, used in the manufacture of the SR-71 Aircraft, for example. But, these alloys cost over 100x as much. So, clearly, this is a consideration for most people, if not the military.
The Key Tool will provide a lifetime of service if properly cared for. The basic guideline is that if you would not use your expensive high quality pocket knife to pry something open, or to turn a screw with the flat side of the blade, please don't try and use your Key Tool.
For the listed price you will receive 2 Key Tools.
